The tournament series organized by the Romanian operator in partnership with global gambling giants have become springboards for professional players, and good opportunities to forge a strong and united player community.
In the ever-changing poker world, but few circuits have stood the test of time. The initial goals are always fabulously ambitious, but the low profit margins and the major difficulties posed by the hundreds and thousands of players who need to be managed at the same time make this business an almost impossible endeavor. Even the large global circuits have seen their falls, dark times and drawbacks.
In this rather harsh climate, not to mention the Romanian legislation that used to be poker adverse before 2015, PokerFest Romania has stood tall and enriched its annual offering for the players with every new season. We ed the CEO of the company, Mr. Sorin Constantinescu, to speak precisely about this continuity. How have you developed this business, and which are its outlooks, we asked him. And he replied with some very interesting statements.
“I entered the poker world naturally, back in 2010, when I found in this game that peaceful oasis I was striving for as a casino manager”, he explained. “I had been in the gambling industry for two decades, and there was little I hadn’t already known. Most importantly: the huge value of the customer, and the imperative that all should revolve around them and their comfort, desires and moods. When you come to play the roulette or blackjack, including poker, you are in your spare time and you don’t feel like moving a muscle. You only want to have fun. Which is why the casino alone bears the burden of making this happen. As a casino manager, I learned how to be mindful of this aspect, and it has helped me a lot to be able to offer poker players that free, comfortable and uncomplicated environment they need to feel good.”
“For me, it was something I had been dreaming about for some time: to see an environment cleared of pathological gamblers, surrounded by an almost evil system designed to exploit their weaknesses. With poker, you are just the organizer, and never play against your own customers. Gamblers compete one against each other in a superb, complex and highly educational competition. Poker has the ability to shape human natures because it requires mental and psychological skills, teaches you discipline, patience and fair-play, and helps you understand how important is to think on long term”.
“Technically, we followed the natural steps: we tried to remove the human factor prone to error from the system, and left almost all to technology. We have now the best-performing game management and control software which allows us to put together huge events without additional efforts or fail. Plus, our app allows everybody to know at any time which is the status of the tournaments and everything there is to know about them. Dealers update the tables in real time, and this is captured instantaneously in our database with global online access.”
As for the future plans, Sorin Constantinescu thinks far ahead, but only speaks about what he knows for sure. Which is why he provided us with some “short-term” details about the 2019 season, and told us in a couple of words about where, when and how the first festival of the year would take place. This is the Unibet Open Ski Edition due to take place in Sinaia in 12-18 February, with participants from around twenty countries.
The structure of this festival to be held in February is nothing new for the gamblers who have already played in Unibet Open series: One EUR 1,100 main event, one EUR 2,200 High Roller, satellites for the two, side events for all pockets, and cash games around the clock. The series’ program will be adapted to this beautiful holiday venue: to leave the participants with some time to enjoy life in the resort, the organizers cleared one program day off poker, and the Main Event is scheduled to start at 03:00 PM every day to leave mornings free for going-outs. The festival also features a welcome party and a Players’ Party, and the players landing in Otopeni for the festival will be taken free of charge to Sinaia.
Nataly Sopacuaperu, the head of events with Unibet spoke about the event: “This is our very first winter edition of Unibet Open, and we are delighted to announce it. Poker festivals combined with winters sports have become very popular over the last years, and we are looking forward to kicking-off the 2019 program of our series in the beautiful Romanian resort of Sinaia”.
Representing PokerFest, Sorin Constantinescu made some comments, too: “In this era of fast and cheap traveling, the picturesque tourist destinations gain ground quickly to the detriment of large capital cities when it comes to poker festivals. Players have understood that poker is more than just playing cards. It is a full-fledged experience that we, the organizers, have the duty to make as pleasant and memorable as possible. The festival of February in Sinaia will do just that: intense poker playing in one of the best known and coquettish Romanian mountain resorts, also a famous historical town”.

Seriile de turnee organizate de operatorul român în colaborare cu giganți ai gamblingului global au devenit rampe de lansare pentru jucători profesioniști și prilej de formare a unei comunități a jucătorilor puternice și unite.
În lumea atât de schimbătoare a pokerului, puține circuite live rezistă probei timpului. Intențiile inițiale sunt mereu fabuloase, însă marjele mici de profit și dificultatea extremă a gestionării a sute și mii de jucători în timp real fac din această afacere o întreprindere aproape imposibilă. Chiar și marile circuite globale au cunoscut declinuri, perioade negre și recesiune.
În acest climat destul de vitreg – la care adăugăm și o legislație românească ostilă pokerului până în 2015 – PokerFest România a rezistat, și în fiecare nou sezon jucătorii au parte de noi adiții la programul anual. Tocmai în legătură cu această perenitate a PokerFestului l-am at pe CEO-ul companiei, Sorin Constantinescu. Cum și-a dezvoltat această afacere, și ce perspective viitoare întrezărește?, l-am întrebat, iar el ne-a răspuns în câteva fraze interesante.
„Am ajuns la poker în mod natural, în 2010, când am găsit în acest joc o oază de pace de care nu aveam parte ca manager de cazinouri”, ne-a explicat el. „Lucrasem în industria gamblingului de două decenii și știam tot ce era de știut. Cel mai important: valoarea uriașă a clientului, necesitatea ca totul să orbiteze în jurul său, a confortului, dorințelor și toanelor lui. Când vii să joci ruletă sau blackjack, inclusiv poker, ești în timpul tău liber și nu mai ai chef să miști un deget, vrei doar să te distrezi, și de aceea toate eforturile acestei relații cad în sarcina cazinoului. Ca șef de cazinou, am învățat să fiu atent la acest aspect și asta m-a ajutat enorm să ofer jucătorilor de poker mediul liber, comod, fără complicații, de care au nevoie ca să se simtă bine.”
„Pentru mine personal a fost ceea ce visam de multă vreme: să văd un mediu fără gambleri patologici și înconjurați de o structură aproape diabolică proiectată să le exploateze slăbiciunea. La poker, esti doar organizator, nu joci împotriva propriilor clienți. Jucătorii se întrec unii cu ceilalți, într-o competiție superbă, complexă și educativă. La poker se formează caractere umane, căci jocul solicită calități mentale și psihologice, te disciplinează, te învață răbdarea, fair-playul și capacitatea de a înțelege cât de important este să gândești pe termen lung”.
„Tehnic, am urmat pașii firești: am încercat să scoatem factorul uman, supus greșelilor, din structura de organizare, și am lăsat aproape totul pe seama tehnologiei. Acum avem cel mai performant program din lume de gestiune și control al jocului, care ne permite să organizăm evenimente uriașe, fără eforturi suplimentare și fără greșeală. În plus, oricine știe în orice moment, prin intermediul aplicației pe care o folosim, care este stadiul turneelor și toate informațiile aferente. Dealerii actualizează în timp real situația de la fiecare masă și aceasta se reflectă instantaneu în baza noastră de date, cât și public, cu acces online universal.”
În ce privește planurile de viitor, Sorin Constantinescu gândește departe dar vorbește doar despre ce știe sigur. De aceea, ne-a dat detalii „pe termen scurt” despre sezonul 2019, povestindu-ne în câteva cuvinte unde, când și cum va avea loc primul festival al anului nou. Intitulat „Unibet Open Ski Edition”, acesta se va desfășura la Sinaia între 12 și 18 februarie, cu participanți din circa douăzeci de țări.
Festivalul din februarie va avea structura cunoscută de cei care au mai jucat serii Unibet Open: un Main Event de 1.100 euro, un High Roller de 2.200 euro, sateliți de calificare spre aceste două evenimente, side-eventuri pentru toate buzunarele și jocuri de cash non-stop. Programul seriei va fi adaptat locației superbe, de vacanță: pentru a lăsa participanților timp să se bucure de viața în stațiune, organizatorii au lăsat în program o zi liberă de poker, iar Main Eventul va debuta zilnic la ora 15:00 pentru a lăsa dimineața disponibilă ieșirilor în aer liber. Festivalul va include o petrecere de bun-venit și un Players’ Party, iar jucătorii sosiți la Otopeni pentru festival vor fi transportați gratuit la Sinaia.
Nataly Sopacuaperu, șefa de evenimente de la Unibet a comentat asupra evenimentului: „Aceasta este prima noastră ediție de iarnă Unibet Open și suntem deosebit de încântați să o anunțăm. Festivalurile de poker îmbinate cu sporturi de iarnă au devenit foarte populare în ultimii ani și de-abia așteptăm să lansăm programul seriei noastre pe 2019 în frumoasa stațiune românească Sinaia”.
Din partea PokerFest, Sorin Constantinescu a declarat cu acest prilej: „În era călătoriilor rapide și ieftine, locațiile turistice pitorești câștigă rapid teren în fața marilor capitale când e vorba de festivaluri de poker. Jucătorii au înțeles că pokerul nu este numai un joc de cărți, ci și o experiență – una pe care noi, ca organizatori, trebuie să le-o facem cât mai plăcută și memorabilă. Festivalul din februarie de la Sinaia va fi exact acest lucru: poker intens într-una din cele mai renumite și cochete stațiuni montane românești, și în același timp oraș istoric renumit”.
