The Hippodrome Casino is the UK’s largest international-style casino, and its busiest. With four floors of gaming including the PokerStars LIVE deck, an award winning restaurant, 180-seat cabaret and music room, six bars and an indoor smoking terrace, they are the West End’s largest and most successful entertainment venue.
Housed within the former Hippodrome Theatre, their main door opens onto one of the busiest streets in Europe, with a secondary entrance leading to the world’s largest ‘Chinatown’ community. Opened in July 2012, The Hippodrome attracts both dedicated and casual gamers plus thousands of visitors seeking ‘London’s Biggest Night Out’, here to enjoy a mixture of dinner, theatre and gambling. They have been awarded Casino of the Year by their peers in the industry.
We discussed with Mr. Simon Thomas – Owner & CEO of Hippodrome Casino, which we wish to thank for his kindness and that for accepted this invitation to make this interview, about this iconic symbol of gambling in London and United Kingdom.
For starters please tell us something about your experience in gambling?
I am the seventh generation of a family that has worked in, lived and breathed the entertainment and gaming industry. We started with travelling fairs, and now have the UK’s largest and most successful casino. My father Jimmy and I opened the Hippodrome on July 13 2012, and we work alongside each other every day.
The Hippodrome is the most important project of my life.
My personal experience began when I ed the family business after working in a merchant bank in the City of London. I wanted to gain experience outside the family firm after leaving university.
I worked alongside my father on several companies in the gaming sector, building up a portfolio of bingo halls, eventually owning the largest bingo concern in the country which was, in a way, a template of what the Hippodrome was to become – a premises that incorporated not only gaming but theatres, restaurants, bars too. I used that experience to build the Hippodrome.
What was the origin of the idea of opening the Hippodrome Casino?
The Hippodrome is the embodiment of the ambitions of the UK’s 2005 Gaming Act, which
finally allowed casinos to move into mainstream leisure and entertainment.
Hitherto, casinos in this country had suffered punitive restrictions and were unable to , or create an environment where visitors could do anything other than gamble…and that includes enjoying themselves. They were, therefore, seen as places which were either too rich, or rather seedy.
The Hippodrome is a genuine UK first, recognised as the benchmark for the future of the sector, having quickly become one of the West End’s most high profile and successful destinations for ‘London’s Biggest Night Out’ – a mixture of entertainment, food & drink and gaming.
London’s Mayor Boris Johnson summed it up perfectly when he officially launched the business, saying: “The creation of this superb new entertainment complex in the heart of the West End is yet another ringing endorsement of London as a great place to invest. This huge project has not only restored and retained the glorious fabric of this historic building but also created hundreds of new jobs for the capital and provided a major boost for local business.”
And this is what we continue to do as we approach our third anniversary.
It is also a place recognized by my peers as achieving something exciting and new, and we have one many major awards along the way, recently capping this with Casino Operator Europe 2015 at the International Gaming Awards.
Did you encounter any problems in opening a casino located in a building with a history of more than 100 years and which hosted a great deal of artistic cultural events of particular importance to London?
The Hippodrome building has always been a pioneer for bringing new types of entertainment to London. I feel we’re simply continuing that tradition.
It was designed by legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham, and sits in the corner of Leicester Square, on one of the busiest pedestrian thoroughfares in the world, with a secondary entrance onto the largest Chinese community outside of China.
It began life in 1900 as a circus variety theatre and has undergone a number of significant transformations, each time adapting to the entertainment needs of the period.
In turns a music hall, a revue theatre and host to the legendary Talk of the Town, it competes with the Palladium (probably London’s most famous theatre) in having hosted the entertainment world’s largest stars. Harry Houdini, Charlie Chaplin, Julie Andrews, the very first performance of ‘jazz’ in the UK, the country’s premier of Swan Lake, Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Michael Jackson and Sammy Davis Jr…these are just some of the thousands of star performances to have taken place at The Hippodrome down the years.
Its new incarnation as the UK’s largest and most popular casino sits perfectly with the building’s tradition of offering something new to London, pushing the boundaries to make the capital and its visitors sit up and take notice.
Yes, we had a few problems and I personally had many sleepless nights during the planning and renovation/build period, but I would have been very surprised if we hadn’t done. We had become the new custodians of one of the country’s entertainment gems, and opening a new style of casino.
But we discovered quickly that when we explained our vision, people appreciated what
we were trying to achieve and applauded us for that.
We faced local opposition from other gaming businesses, but also we had to explain to many heritage and theatrical bodies that we were breathing new life into a building cherished by many – the Hippodrome has a 60% recognition of those who live and work in London.
Obviously people were concerned, and it was vital to methodically outline our goals and ambitions.
We engaged a raft of influential bodies, from a sceptical local authority to nervous historical and theatrical trustees concerned at the idea of introducing a casino operation within two, Grade 2 listed London buildings.
We also demonstrated how much the casino world has changed through the new legislation; that it could contribute massively to the ongoing regeneration of the area and create valuable jobs in the process in the middle of one of the toughest recessions the world had ever seen.
Within weeks of our launch The Hippodrome had become the busiest traditional casino in the UK and widely recognised as a category changer for the UK market.
The Sunday Times newspaper, had “executed his ambitious vision, perfectly demonstrating how new legislation allowed the transformation of UK casinos from ‘don’t go to must go’.”

Cu patru etaje dedicate jocurilor, inclusiv o masă de PokerStars LIVE, un restaurant premiat, cabaret şi sală de spectacole cu 180 de locuri, șase baruri şi o terasă interioară pentru fumat, ei sunt cea mai mare locație de divertisment şi cu cel mai mare succes din West End.
Găzduit în fostul Hippodrome Theatre, intrarea principală se deschide pe una din străzile cele mai aglomerate din Europa, cu o intrare secundară care duce la cea mai mare comunitate „Chinatown” din lume. Deschis în iulie 2012, Hippodrome atrage atât gameri dedicați cât si jucători ocazionali, plus mii de vizitatori care caută ‘O noapte de pomină în Londra’, pentru a se bucura de un mix cu cină, teatru şi jocuri de noroc. Au fost laureați cu distincția Cazinoul Anului de către colegii lor din industrie.
Am discutat cu domnul Simon Thomas – Proprietar & CEO al Hippodrome Casino, căruia am dori să îi mulţumim pentru amabilitate şi pentru că a acceptat această invitație de a ne acorda acest interviu, despre acest iconic simbol al gamingului din Londra şi din Marea Britanie.
Pentru început vă rugăm să ne spuneți câteva cuvinte despre experiența dumneavoastră în gambling?
Eu sunt a şaptea generaţie dintr-o familie care a lucrat, a trăit şi a respirat divertisment şi industrie de gambling. Am început cu expoziții de călătorie, şi acum deținem cel mai mare şi cel mai de succes cazinou din Marea Britanie. Tatăl meu, Jimmy, a deschis Hippodrome pe 13 iulie 2012, şi lucrăm unul alături de celălalt în fiecare zi.
Hippodrome este cel mai important proiect din viaţa mea.
Experienţa mea personală a început când m-am alăturat afacerii familiei după ce anterior lucrasem la o bancă comercială din Londra. După Universitate, am vrut să câştig experienţă în afara firmei de familie.
Am lucrat alături de tatăl meu în mai multe companii din sectorul jocurilor de noroc, construind un portofoliu de săli de bingo, în cele din urmă, deţinând cea mai mare companie de bingo din ţară, care a fost, într-un fel, un model a ceea ce urma să devină Hippodrome – un loc care încorpora nu numai jocuri, dar și teatre, restaurante, baruri. Am folosit această experienţă pentru a construi Hippodrome Casino.
Care a fost originea ideii de a deschide Hippodrome Casino?
Hippodrome este întruchiparea ambiţiei Legislației de Gaming adoptată de Marea Britanie în 2005, care în cele din urmă le-a permis cazinourilor să se mute în zona principală de recreere şi divertisment.
Până în prezent, în această ţară cazinourile au suferit restricţii punitive şi s-au aflat în imposibilitatea de a-și face publicitate sau de a crea un mediu în care vizitatorii ar putea face altceva în afară de gambling… şi asta include divertismentul. Acestea au fost prin urmare considerate locuri destinate fie celor prea bogați, sau mai degrabă celor abătuți.
Hippodrome este o premieră veritabilă în Marea Britanie, recunoscut ca punct de referinţă pentru viitorul sectorului, devenind rapid una dintre destinațiile cu cel mai înalt profil şi succes din West End pentru „O noapte de pomină în Londra” – un amestec de divertisment, mâncare & băutură şi jocuri de noroc.
Primarul Londrei, Boris Johnson a rezumat perfect la lansarea oficială a locației, spunând: „Crearea acestui superb nou complex de divertisment în inima West End-ului este încă un alt semnal că Londra este un loc foarte bun pentru investiții. Acest proiect imens nu numai că a restaurat şi păstrat cadrul glorios al acestei clădiri istorice, dar a și creat, de asemenea, sute de locuri noi de muncă pentru capitală şi a oferit un impuls major pentru mediul de afaceri local”.
Şi aceasta este ceea ce vom continua să facem pe măsură ce ne vom apropia de aniversarea celor trei ani de existență.
Este, de asemenea, un loc recunoscut de către colegii mei ca fiind ceva interesant şi nou, şi am câștigat o mulțime de premii importante de când am pornit la drum, încununate de recenta distincție “Operatorul de Cazinouri al Anului 2015” de la International Gaming Awards.
Ați întâmpinat vreo problemă în deschiderea unui cazinou situat într-o clădire cu o istorie de peste 100 de ani şi care a găzduit o mare parte din evenimentele cultural artistice de o importanţă deosebită pentru Londra?
Clădirea Hippodrome a fost întotdeauna un pionier în a aduce noi tipuri de divertisment la Londra. Noi suntem de părere că pur şi simplu continuăm această tradiție.
Aceasta a fost proiectată de legendarul arhitect de teatre, Frank Matcham, şi este poziționată pe colțul lui Leicester Square, una dintre cele mai aglomerate artere pietonale din lume, având și o intrare secundară spre cea mai mare comunitate chineză din afara Chinei.
Clădirea și-a început viaţa în 1900 ca teatru de varietăți și circ şi a suferit o serie de transformări semnificative, fiind adaptată de fiecare dată la nevoile de divertisment ale perioadei repective.
S-a transformat într-o sală de spectacole, teatru de revistă şi gazdă pentru legendarul Talk of the Town, acesta concurând cu Palladium (probabil cele mai renumit teatru din Londra), găzduind unele dintre cele mai mari staruri de divertisment. Harry Houdini, Charlie Chaplin, Julie Andrews, primul spectacol de „jazz” din Marea Britanie, premiera în ţară a spectacolului Lacul Lebedelor, Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Michael Jackson şi Sammy Davis Jr….Acestea sunt doar câteva dintre miile de spectacole ale starurilor care au avut loc la Hippodrome de-a lungul anilor.
Noua sa încarnare ca cele mai mare şi cel mai popular cazinou din Marea Britanie se mulează perfect pe tradiţia clădirii de a oferi ceva nou în Londra, împingând limitele pentru a face capitala şi vizitatorii săi mândrii şi interesanți.
Da, am avut câteva probleme şi am avut personal multe nopți nedormite în timpul planificării şi în perioada de renovare/construcție, dar aș fi fost foarte surprins dacă nu ar fi fost așa. Noi am devenit noii custozi ai unei nestemate a divertismentului din ţară, şi am deschis un nou stil de cazinou.
Ne-am confruntat cu opoziţia locala din alte companii de jocuri de noroc dar, de asemenea, am avut multe de explicat patrimoniului şi organismelor teatrale care au adus o viaţă nouă într-o clădire preţuită de către mulţi – Hippodrome are o recunoaştere de 60% din partea celor care trăiesc şi lucrează în Londra.
Evident, oamenii și-au făcut griji, şi a fost vital să subliniem metodic scopurile şi ambiţiile noastre.
Dar am descoperit repede că atunci când am explicat viziunea noastră, oamenii au apreciat ceea ce am încercat să facem şi ne-au prețuit pentru asta.
Am convins o serie de organisme influente, de la o autoritate locală sceptică până la i de obiective istorice şi de teatru supărați pe ideea de a introduce o operaţiune de cazinou într-o clădire de Clasa a 2-a din Londra.
Am demonstrat, de asemenea, cât de mult s-a schimbat lumea cazinourilor prin noua legislaţie; că aceasta ar putea contribui masiv la regenerarea în curs de desfăşurare a zonei şi că poate crea locuri de muncă valoroase în mijlocul uneia dintre cele mai dificile recesiuni văzută de lume vreodată.
În termen de săptămâni de la lansarea lui Hippodrome, am devenit cel mai aglomerat cazino tradiţional din Marea Britanie şi în general recunoscuți ca un schimbător de categorie pentru piaţa din Marea Britanie.
Ziarul Sunday Times, a avut comentariul „și-a înfăptuit ambiţioasa sa viziune, demonstrând perfect cum noua legislație permite transformarea cazinourilor din Marea Britanie de la ‚nu mergi, la trebuie să mergi’”.
