The son of two Armenian immigrants and former judo fighter, in 15 years of activity Roger Hairabedian has managed to become one of the most famous poker players in . Born in 1955, Roger has had a rocky life, crammed with strong emotions, disappointments and a year and a half spent in prison.
The first ion
When he was 12 years old, Roger’s parents entered him for judo. His mother and his father still suffering after the genocide in Armenia from which they had fled from, so they entered the child for fighting in the idea that in this way he might be able to defend himself. From means of self-defense, judo was immediately turned into a ion and a place of escape for the future star of Poker. Roger has progressed so much that he has come to the attention of the French Federation, and in 1977 he became part of the its team. At this point, the first joys and disappointments enter his life. He becomes the European Vice-Champion with the team, and in a match with Japan he manages to defeat the world champion in front of more than 3,000 delirious ers. This victory was to be described by Roger as the strongest emotion of his life. And the deception follows: in the final of the French Championship he feels disadvantaged by the arbitrators and misses the qualification to the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980.
Converting to poker
” Judo requires a lot of rigor and discipline, it is a very tough sport. It can be compared to Poker because it also one uses the force of his opponent to defeat him. During matches, my goal is always to put pressure on my opponent. Thanks to my experience in judo I have a powerful psychic and I am able to survive up to 72 hours without sleep, “these are the words with which the one nicknamed „The Terminator” describes his switch from judo to poker and how his former activity helped him to succeed.
After the Olympic Games in Moscow, Roger gets married and returns to the South of , but he is low on money. He takes several part-time jobs and he enters some small business. 20 meters from one of his places of work he comes across a place where illegal poker games were organized. Curious at first, then catching this bug, Roger gets attached to this sport. It becomes a hobby in which he invests a lot of practice, however, after several years, it will become his new profession.
What was the thing that attracted him to poker in particular? „Through this game, I quickly made friends with people who welcomed me with open arms, respected me and helped me,” says Big Roger. Poker enters in his bloodstream, so he too starts to organize games. Soon comes to be known as the best player in the Paca region.
The Prison
Roger’s career is interrupted by an unforeseen incident. „I have served a year and a half of prison in three different periods. I don’t deny that I have done some things, but not this time. The prison was like a lesson of humility. I have not suffered too much, but my family did”, said Roger. Among the charges that have been brought up there was also the one of organizing illegal poker games.
The explosion and the great moments
In Paris, March 1999, Roger disputes his first tour as a professional poker player. He finishes fifth and wins only $ 594, but here his ascent begins. Until 2004, he plays another 17 tournaments, all in , finishing each time in the top 10. In April 2002 he won the Spring Tournament, his first victory as a professional player, and in 2004 he starts playing at international tournaments. In September 2004, he plays for the first time outside , at the Barcelona Open and finishes in the 6th place. The great moments of the „The Terminator” came in 2012 and 2013, years in which he consecutively won the WSOP title of European Champion. „In poker, the most prestigious thing you can achieve is to win the bracelet. To do this, one must overcome the best players in the world, „said Roger in 2013 after this was the second time the WSOPE. In poker, the bracelet is similar to the gold medal received by Olympics after the they win a trial.
The very good results achieved puts Roger in first place in the LivePoker ranking in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, and in 2011 in the second place. Towards the end of his career he played at several tournaments in Morocco, becomes Ambassador of the Casino in Marrakech and he establishes residence in this town. Currently, he rarely participates in tournaments as a player, instead he gets involved in the organization of several high-level poker competitions in Morocco and Europe.

Fiul unor imigranți armeni și fost luptător de judo, Roger Hairabedian a reușit în 15 ani să ajungă unul dintre cei mai renumiți jucători de poker din Franța. Născut în 1955, Roger a avut parte de o viață tumultoasă, presărată cu emoții puternice, dezamăgiri precum și un an și jumătate petrecut la închisoare.
Prima pasiune
Pe când avea 12 ani, micul Roger e înscris de părinții săi la judo. Mama și tatăl său încă sufereau în urma genocidului de care fugiseră din Armenia, așa că și-au înscris copilul la lupte cu ideea ca el să se poată apăra singur. Din mijloc de auto-apărare, judo-ul s-a transformat imediat într-o pasiune și un loc de evadare pentru viitorul star al pokerului. Roger a progresat atât de mult încât a ajuns în atenția Federației ze, iar din 1977 a început să facă parte din lotul național. E momentul în care apar primele bucurii, dar și dezamăgiri. Devine vicecampion european cu echipa, iar într-un meci cu Japonia reușește să îl învingă pe campionul mondial în fața a peste 3.000 de eri în delir. Această victorie avea să fie descrisă de Roger ca cea mai puternică emoție avută în viața sa. Urmează și decepția: în finala campionatului Franței se simte dezavantajat de arbitri și ratează calificarea la Jocurile Olimpice de la Moscova din 1980. Avea să participe totuși, însă din postura de înlocuitor.
Reconvertirea la poker
”Judo-ul solicită multă rigoare și disciplină, este un sport foarte dur. Se poate compara cu pokerul deoarece și aici te folosești de forța adversarului pentru a-l învinge. În timpul meciurilor, scopul meu e mereu să pun presiune pe adversar. Datorită experienței avute în judo am devenit puternic psihic și capabil să rezist 72 de ore fără să dorm”, sunt cuvintele cu care își descrie cel supranumit ”Terminatorul” trecerea de la judo la poker și modul în care fosta lui activitate l-a ajutat să reușească.
După Jocurile Olimpice de la Moscova, Roger se căsătorește și revine în sudul Franței, însă nu prea are bani. Începe să lucreze câte puțin în mai multe părți și se bagă în mici afaceri. La 20 de metri de unul dintre locurile sale de muncă dă peste un loc în care se desfășoară partide ilegale de poker. Mai întâi curios, apoi prins de acest microb, Roger se atașează de acest sport. Devine un hobby în care investește multă practică însă, peste câțiva ani, aceasta va fi noua lui meserie.
Ce l-a atras, însă, în mod special la poker? ”Prin intermediul acestui joc, m-am împrietenit foarte repede cu oameni care m-au primit cu brațele deschise, m-au stimat și m-au ajutat”, afirmă Big Roger. Pokerul îi intră în sânge, așa că începe să organizeze și el partide. În scurt timp ajunge să fie cunoscut drept cel mai bun jucător din regiunea Paca.
Închisoarea
Cariera lui Roger e întreruptă de un incident neprevăzut. ”Am făcut un an și jumătate de închisoare în trei perioade diferite. Nu neg că am făcut anumite lucruri, însă nu și de data asta. Închisoarea a fost ca o lecție de umilință. Eu nu am suferit prea mult, însă familia mea, da”, avea să povestească Roger. Printre acuzațiile care i s-au adus a fost și faptul că organiza partide ilegale de poker.
Explozia și marile momente
În martie 1999, Roger dispută primul turneu ca jucător profesionist, la Paris. Termină pe locul cinci și câștigă doar 594 dolari, însă de aici începe ascensiunea lui. Până în 2004, mai ia parte la 17 turnee, toate în Franța, unde de fiecare dată termină între primii 10. În aprilie 2002 câștigă turneul Spring Tournament, prima victorie la profesioniști, iar din 2004 încep turneele internaționale. În septembrie 2004 joacă pentru prima oară în afara Franței, la Barcelona Open și termină pe locul 6. Urmează o carieră fulminantă cu turnee disputate în Las Vegas, Dakar, San Remo sau Marrakech.
Marile momente ale ”Terminatorului” au fost în 2012 și 2013, ani în care a câștigat consecutiv titlul de campion al WSOP Europe. ”În poker, să câștigi brățara este cel mai prestigios lucru pe care îl poți reuși. Pentru a izbuti acest lucru trebuie să învingi cei mai buni jucători din lume”, declara Roger în 2013 după ce se impunea a doua oară la WSOPE. La poker, brățara e similiară cu medalia de aur pe care olimpicii o primesc după ce câștigă o probă.
Evoluțiile foarte bune îl plasează pe Roger pe primul loc în clasamentul LivePoker în anii 2009, 2010, 2012 și 2013, iar în anul 2011 termină pe locul doi. Spre finalul carierei dispută câteva turnee în Maroc, devine Ambasador al Cazinoului din Marrakech și își stabilește reședința în acest oraș. În prezent, participă foarte rar ca jucător la turnee, în schimb se implică în organizarea mai multor competiții de poker în Maroc și Europa.
