We continue to present you the interview with Mr. Simon Thomas – Owner & CEO of Hippodrome Casino, about this iconic symbol of gambling in London and United Kingdom.
Please provide our readers with an overview of the Hippodrome Casino. What types
of games are theret be found within the casino?
What people have to realize is that while Casinos can be fun and provide a rich mix of entertainment, they also contribute massively to an area in of jobs, tourist visitor numbers and regeneration.
We invested £40 million in creating a business that has four gaming floors, a cabaret theatre, a restaurant, six bars, two private dining rooms and London’s only ‘indoor’ smoking terrace.
What is the most profitable type of game on the gaming floor of the Hippodrome
Casino? What is your favorite game and why?
Roulette and blackjack are the most popular games because they’re traditional, great
fun with different characteristics and known the world over.
We also have London’s only ‘Dice’ table, which is massively popular.
What are the main attractions, in other words the strengths of the Hippodrome Casino?
We never stand still. When we opened we had a grand plan, which we have adapted as time goes by. A great example of this is our lower ground floor which leads directly into Chinatown and served as the behind-the-scenes ‘engine room’ of the original theatre.
The area is large, but was not as busy as we hoped. So we created an entirely new casino, with its own identity – Lola’s Underground Casino – which incorporated a ‘speakeasy’ feel with a cage for dancing girls sited within the tables, and a lounge area for food and drink.
London has never seen anything like it, and it is now one of the most popular areas for a new type of audience at The Hippodrome. But the main attraction of The Hippodrome is its ambition to be ‘London’s Biggest Night Out’, where people can not only game but be entertained, and eat and drink in the best, safest surroundings, 24 hours a day.
Our 180 seat theatre is one of the most popular music and cabaret rooms in the capital, and we recently hosted the pop superstar Prince here for his final 2014 UK gig. That was incredible.
Also, our 150 seat restaurant – Heliot Steak House – has just been judged Best Steak restaurant in London. No mean feat for a restaurant within a casino.
We also have the West End’s largest ‘indoor’ smoking terrace, unique in the capital.
Can you tell us which was the largest prize cashed by a player at the Hippodrome Casino? What about the greatest amount lost by a player here?
Everyone’s a winner at The Hippodrome.
What is the number of players visiting the casino on a weekly basis?
We welcome between 32,000 and 36,000 to the Hippodrome every week, with Fridays and
Saturdays our busiest days.
We have just celebrated our 4 millions visitor.
With regard to the nationality of your visitors, can you please tell us besides the British players of course, which country is best represented in of players visiting your casino?
I wish I could be more precise about our true customer demographic, but one of the main strengths of the Hippodrome is its location – in the heart of London’s West End, an area that attracts the most varied audience in the world.
We know that around a third of our visitor audience is Asian because of our close proximity to Chinatown, but after that, from day to day it is anyone’s guess who will be there. That’s part of the reason why I love my job so much, welcoming and meeting so many different people from around the world.
If I am not mistaken, in 2013, together with Pokerstars, you have opened the first
LIVE poker room in the world. What was the ground of this collaboration and in what
direction do you think it will go?
We have a very positive relationship with PokerStars which is the world’s top poker brand. And we are pioneering the way a bricks and mortar club house can interact and engage with the online world. We host some fantastic offline finals to online
tournaments and the players love it.
Lately, online gambling has become quite a phenomenon worldwide, of course, the Hippodrome Casino can be also found in the virtual environment, which are your main
weapons in the “war” with the other gaming organizers?
We have a unique proposition for the Hippodrome’s online audience because of the close synergy between the clubhouse in Leicester Square and the online portal. That, I believe, is where we provide something unique for the online audience.
Can the online games threaten the organizers of land based gambling? In what direction is gambling heading, in your opinion, which is the future of gambling in
the next 15 years?

From your point of view as a gambling expert, can you tell us at this point in time which is the largest gambling market and what other region do you believe it will have a “boom” in the near future?
The Asian market is fascinating, centred on Macau. The South East Asian countries are looking at gambling as a new source of income. But there are some very exciting developments in massive new gaming resorts planned in Europe.
Besides gambling, what are your other ions, hobbies?

Teatrul nostru cu 180 de locuri este una dintre cele mai populare săli de muzică şi cabaret din capitală, iar recent l-am găzduit aici pe Prince, superstarul pop, pentru ultimul său concert din 2014 în Marea Britanie. A fost incredibil.
De asemenea, restaurantul nostru de 150 locuri – Heliot Steak House – tocmai a fost declarat cel mai bun restaurant din Londra în care se servesc fripturi. Ceea ce nu e lucru puțin pentru un restaurant dintr-un cazinou.

Ne puteti spune care a fost cel mai mare premiu încasat de un jucător la Hippodrome Casino? Dar cea mai mare sumă pierdută de un jucător aici?

Care este numărul de jucători care vizitează cazinoul săptămânal?

În ceea ce privește naționalitatea vizitatorilor, vă rugăm să ne spuneți, în afară de jucătorii britanici, care este cea mai bine reprezentată ţară în ceea ce privește jucătorii care vizitează cazinoul dumneavoastră?
Mi-aș fi dorit să pot fi mai precis cu privire la demografia clienților noștri, dar unul dintre punctele forte ale lui Hippodrome este amplasarea sa – în inima zonei West End, Londra, care atrage cel mai variat public din lume.
Ştim că aproximativ o treime din publicul vizitator este din Asia, din cauza vecinătății noastre imediate cu Chinatown, dar în afară de asta, nu se poate prevede de la o zi la alta cine ne va vizita. Acest aspect face parte din motivul pentru care îmi place job-ul meu atât de mult, întâmpin şi cunosc atât de mulţi oameni diferiți din întreaga lume.
Dacă nu mă înşel, în 2013 ați deschis împreună cu Pokerstars prima sală de poker LIVE din lume. De ce ați demarat această colaborare şi în ce direcţie credeți că se va îndrepta?
Avem o relaţie foarte pozitivă cu PokerStars, care este brandul de poker de top din lume. Şi împreună suntem în pionierat încercând să găsim modul prin care un club poate interacţiona şi colabora cu lumea online. Găzduim câteva finale offline fantastice pentru turnee online şi jucătorilor le place foarte mult acest lucru.
În ultima vreme, jocurile de noroc online au devenit un fenomen destul de răspândit la nivel mondial, desigur, Hippodrome Casino poate fi de asemenea găsit și în mediul virtual, care sunt principalele dumneavoastră arme în „războiul” cu alți organizatori de jocuri de noroc?
Avem o propunere unică pentru publicul online al lui Hippodrome datorată sinergiei strânse dintre clubul din Leicester Square şi portalul online. Asta, cred eu, este ceva unic ce noi îl oferim publicului de online.

Din punctul dumneavoastră de vedere, în calitate de expert în jocuri de noroc, ne puteţi spune în acest moment care este cea mai mare piaţă de jocuri de noroc şi ce altă regiune credeţi că va avea un „boom” în viitorul apropiat?
Piaţa asiatică este fascinantă, fiind centrată bineînțeles în Macao. Ţările asiatice de sud-est privesc jocurile de noroc ca pe o nouă sursă de venit. Dar există unele evoluţii foarte interesante în ceea ce privește noile mari resorturi de gaming planificate pentru Europa.
În afară de jocurile de noroc ce alte pasiuni, hobby-uri, aveți?
Frumoasa mea soţie şi cei trei copiii minunați pe care-i avem sunt motivul pentru care fac asta.
