Besides numerous legends and established names of poker, during the last years youngsters in there early career have begun to make room for themselves, succeeding, however, to obtain surprising victories in major tournaments. Joe McKeehen is a concrete example of this category.
Born in 1991 in North Wales, Pennsylvania, McKeehen still lacks in life experience. He graduated from La Salle College and was a laureate in mathematics at the University of Arcadia, a private educational institution. Besides numbers and cards, he developed a ion for games, and in 2010 became world champion at Risk, a strategy game.
If his life experience is yet green, however in just six years he has managed to gain a huge experience as a poker player. His recipe? He participates at as many tournaments as possible to increase his chances of winning. So it is that in just six years he has managed to obtain 96 cashes from events in which he played. In addition, of the 96 cashes, 14 times he managed to win the event as well. The greatest success it ed in 2015 at WSOP, when he won the No Limit Hold’em Main Event and received a prize of $ 7,683,346. These are impressive numbers for a player who is only 24 years old.
He plays poker since he was a minor
To reach these performances, McKeehen started playing poker since 2003, when he was just 12 years old. Like other players, he saw the game on TV and started practicing it himself. Joe itted he flirted with online poker even if he was a minor and even now he has a nickname that is active in online tournaments: dude904.
As soon as he turned 18, he went to Turning Stone Casino where he began to enroll in various poker events. In August 2010 he was already winning his first money from poker: he finished 16th in the Main Event, a tournament organized by PokerStars and receives $ 4,100 for a buy-in of $ 2,500. By January 2012, 10 more cashes followed, but consisting of modest amounts. At PokerStars Caribbean Adventure he won his first event, but his first major prize too:
$ 116,230 in Turbo No Limit Hold’em with a buy-in of $ 2,150. „I was lucky that I was successful even from the beginning, and this did not prevent me to give up on my dream. I became a professional player from my first year of college”, Joe confessed in an interview with pokernews.com. And he did not leave school, even if at first he merged classes with live tournaments and online poker.
Another series of events with cashing followed, but he had received modest amounts, until March 2013, when he won the WSOP Main Event in Atlantic City and the sum of $ 174,147. The same recipe was kept during the next year and Joe would be in the poer spotlights again, in June 2014, the month in which he earned nearly one million dollars from two events. At the beginning of the month he manages to finish first in the Event # 26 of the Deepstack Extravaganza III in Las Vegas and wins $ 101,864 and three weeks later he had finished second in WSOP’s Monster Stack Event and is rewarded with $ 820,863.
The Big Prize: 2015 WSOP Champion
It can be said that summers are always lucrative for McKeehen. After he had managed to win substantial prizes during the summer in the previous years, in 2015 he was to succeed the real strike of his career. He finished in the first place at the Main Event of the WSOP of $ 10,000 and won a huge prize worth $ 7,683,346, and his first gold bracelet. The cards that helped him win were A♥ and 10♦, while his opponent, Josh Beckley, was shot down with a pair of 4♦ and a 4♣ in hand. The board displayed Q♠, 10♣, 5♠, 5♦ and J♣.
His victory did not surprise anyone because Joe has dominated the event. He entered the final table having a double number of chips than the net player in line, and at the beginning of the last day of the game he had even treble it. Therefore, few were the times when he had to worry about his chips.
The Duel Daniel Negreanu
One of the interesting moments of this event was the duel with Daniel Negreanu. The most popular poker player born in Romania hoped to win the event, but Joe has removed and sent him home on the 11th place, and this stage victory helped increase the number of his chips.
„Once I removed Daniel, all eyes were on me. I believe that, by eliminating him, the public perceived me as a slightly negative character. We both could have played the final hand of the event, but luck was simply on my side. It is regrettable that Negreanu failed to reach a higher level in the game, but we did not went there to make friends. If that thought makes me a villain, then it’s ok. I hope that by the end of the year people will like me a little bit more. I understand the disappointment of Daniel because he came to win the tournament and he was the favorite, but it was meant to be, „said Joe immediately after he had removed from the game the Romanian who currently holds Canadian citizenship.
McKeehen started 2016 well and earned his first big prize in winter. At the Super High Roller, PokerStars Caribbean Adventure he was ranked No. 2 and grossed $ 1,220,480.

Născut în 1991 în North Wales, Pennsylvania, McKeehen nu are încă o experiență de viață prea mare. A jucat poker încă de când era minor

Până în ianuarie 2012, mai urmează 10 clasări în bani, însă pe sume modeste. La PokerStars Caribbean Adventure câștigă primul său eveniment, dar și primul premiu important: 116,230$ în Turbo No Limit Hold’em cu buy-in de 2,150$. ”Am avut norocul că am avut succes încă ce la început, iar asta nu m-a împiedicat să renunț la visul meu. Am devenit jucător profesionist încă din anul 1 de studenție”, avea să mărturisească Joe într-un interviu pentru pokernews.com. Și nu a renunțat la studii, chiar dacă la început le îmbina cu turneele live și cele online de poker.
A urmat o altă serie de evenimente în care s-a clasat în bani, dar a încasat sume modeste, până în martie 2013, când s-a impus în Main Event-ul turneului WSOP din Atlantic City și a câștigat 174,147$. Aceeași rețetă s-a menținut și în următorul an, iar Joe avea să iasă din nou la rampă în iunie 2014, lună în care câștigă aproape un milion de dolari din două evenimente. Se poate spune că pentru McKeehen verile sunt mereu bănoase. După ce în precedenții ani reușise să câștige premii substanțiale în sezonul estival, în 2015 avea să dea adevărata lovitură a carierei. Termină pe primul loc în Main Eventul de 10,000$ al WSOP și câștigă un premiu uriaș în valoare de 7,683,346$, dar și prima sa brățară de aur. Cărțile care l-au ajutat să se impună au fost A♥ și 10♦, în timp ce adversarul său, Josh Beckley, a fost doborât cu o pereche de 4♦ și 4♣ în mână. Pe masă au venit Q♠, 10♣, 5♠, 5♦ și J♣.
Victoria lui nu a surprins pe nimeni deoarece Joe a dominat evenimentul. A intrat la masa finală cu dublul jetoanelor față de următorul clasat, iar la începutul ultimei zile de joc avea chiar triplu față de acesta. Prin urmare, puține au fost momentele în care a trebuit să își facă griji în privința fiselor.
Duelul cu Daniel Negreanu
Unul dintre momentele interesante ale acestui event a fost duelul cu Daniel Negreanu. Cel mai popular jucător de poker născut în România spera să câștige evenimentul, însă Joe l-a eliminat și l-a trimis acasă de pe locul 11, iar această victorie de etapă a contribuit la mărirea numărului de jetoane pe care le avea.
”După ce l-am eliminat pe Daniel, toți ochii erau pe mine. Cred că prin eliminarea lui publicul m-a perceput ca un personaj puțin negativ. Amândoi am fi putut juca mâna finală a evenimentului, însă pur și simplu norocul a fost de partea mea. Este regretabil pentru poker că Negreanu nu a reușit să ajungă mai departe, însă nu am venit aici ca să îmi fac prieteni. Dacă asta mă face să fiu considerat un personaj negativ, atunci e ok. Sper ca până la sfârșitul anului lumea mă va place puțin mai mult. Înțeleg dezamăgirea lui Daniel pentru că el a venit să câștige turneul și a fost favorit, dar așa a fost să fie”, a spus Joe imediat după ce l-a eliminat din joc pe românul care în prezent deține cetățenie canadiană.
McKeehen a început cu bine și anul 2016 și a obținut primul mare premiu în sezonul de iarnă. În Super High Rollerul de la PokerStars Caribbean Adventure s-a clasat pe locul 2 și a încasat 1,220,480$.
