Bay of Angels (1963)
This precisely wrought, emotionally penetrating romantic drama from director Jacques Demy, set largely in the casinos of Nice, is a visually lovely but darkly realistic investigation into love and obsession. A bottle-blonde Jacqueline „Jackie” Demaistre (played by Jeanne Moreau) is at her blithe best as a gorgeous gambling addict, and Jean Fournier (played by Claude Mann) is the bank clerk drawn into her risky world. “Bay of Angels” is among Demy’s most somber works.
Jean Fournier, a young bank employee, is encouraged by his friend Caron (Paul Guers) to take an interest in gambling. After winning money in a game of roulette, he decides to vacation in Nice, where he falls in love with Jackie, divorced and mother to a child she rarely visits.
Though Jackie also enjoys Jean’s company, she constantly warns him that her ion for gambling will always be greater. Jackie’s husband left her because — and Jackie agrees — she loves gambling more than she loves him.
Jean becomes jealous of not having all of her attention and has mixed feelings about gambling, yet he too is to some extend seduced by this new life style that involves taking risks. Despite Jackie’s cool façade and alleged control over her choices – she claims she is unattached to the money itself, but rather the thrill of the game, and doesn’t mind going from rich to poor in a matter of seconds – she soon begins to reveal her vulnerability and the emptiness she often feels as result of her addiction.
Interesting scene is when she loses her second to last chip, but is intrigued by Jean who plays the same number as she does. When Jean chooses another number for the next round, Jackie asks him why, as if he could possibly have any reason in a game of 36-1 odds. He simply says, “Because.” She is convinced, plays the same number, and they win. Back from the precipice, back in the money.
Jackie said on time during the movie that “What I love about gambling is this idiotic life of luxury and poverty.” The story is relatively simple. We wonder if they’re going to break away — and maybe they do, maybe they will. Or maybe they won’t. The circularity of the narrative means we don’t know what’s going to happen even when the film ends.
But “Bay of Angels” isn’t about the story. It isn’t about redemption. It’s about those shields the characters have hidden behind.
The Underneath (1995)
The film is based on the novel Criss Cross by Don Tracy. Michael Chambers (played by Peter Gallagher) returns home to Austin, Texas, to celebrate his mother’s marriage a genial man (Ed Dutton played by Paul Dooley) who works for an armored-car company.
Michael had been ousted from his home town due to his gambling indiscretions and had left his wife to deal with the mess he created. He now must reassimilate back into the town, renew his relationships with his family and friends (and enemies) and, most of all, seek out his ex-wife to woo her again.
People in the city are surprised to see him, especially his wife Rachel (Alison Elliott), who is still furious at him for walking out on her. He walked out on a lot of other people, too, including some heavy-duty bookmakers he owed big bucks to. Even his brother, David (Adam Trese), is not very happy to see Michael return – that now is a local cop. He hates his brother.
Michael wants Rachel back, but Rachel has a new lover, local nightclub owner Tommy Dundee (William Fichtner), who is a very jealous guy. Rachel herself is a young woman without a game plan. She wants to be an actress, but is happy to start out with „exposure”, and paints numbers on fresh eggs so she can rehearse the way the girls read the numbers off the ping-pong balls during the lottery drawings.
In that process of his comeback, Michael obtains a job working with his mother’s new husband as an armored car driver. He finds his niche back in the community and his way back into his ex’s heart. His troubles surmount when he and his wife are caught in the act by her hoodlum boyfriend/fiancé. To get out of this predicament, Michael must concoct a plan to heist of a payroll being carried by his armored car company with Tommy and Rachel. After that, the double-crossings and back-stabbings begin.

Această dramă emoționantă scrisă și regizată de Jacques Demy, filmată în mare parte în cazinorile din Nice, este o investigație realistă, drăguță, dar sumbră a sentimentului de dragoste și a obsesiei. O blondă apetisantă, Jacqueline „Jackie” Demaistre (jucată de Jeanne Moreau), este o dependentă de jocuri de noroc superbă, iar Jean Fournier (jucat de Claude Mann) este recepționerul de bancă atras în lumea ei riscantă. “Bay of Angels” se numără printre cele mai sumbre producții ale lui Demy.

În ciuda falsei fațade și a presupusului control asupra alegerilor făcute afișate de Jackie – ea susține că nu este atașată de bani în sine, ci mai degrabă de emoția jocului și că nu o deranjează să treacă de la statutul de bogată la cel de săracă în doar câteva secunde – în curând ea începe să își dezvăluie vulnerabilitatea și sentimentul de pustiu pe care îl simte adesea, ca rezultat al dependenței sale.
O scenă interesantă este cea în care ea pierde penultimul jeton, dar este intrigată de Jean, care joacă același număr pe care îl joacă și ea. În runda următoare, când John alege alt număr, Jackie îl întreabă de ce a făcut acest lucru, de parcă ar fi putut avea vreun motiv relevant într-un joc cu șanse de 36 la 1. Acesta îi răspunde pur și simplu,”Așa.” Fiind convinsă de răspuns, ea joacă același număr și cei doi câștigă. Nu mai este în pericol, este din nou în bani.
Jackie spune la un moment dat în timpul filmului că “ceea ce îmi place la jocul de noroc este această viață absurdă trăită între lux și sărăcie.” Povestea este relativ simplă. Ne întrebăm dacă cei doi vor scăpa – poate că da, poate că vor reuși. Sau poate nu. Circularitatea narativă înseamnă că nu vom ști ce se va întâmpla nici după ce filmul se termină.
Dar “Bay of Angels” nu este despre povestea în sine. Nu este nici despre izbăvire. Este despre acele scuturi pe care personajele le-au ascuns în spatele lor.

Oamenii din oraș sunt mirați să îl vadă, în special soția sa Rachel (Alison Elliott), care este încă furioasă datorită faptului că acesta a părăsit-o. Fugise de mulți oameni, precum câțiva agenți de pariuri cărora le datora mulți bani. Nici măcar fratele său, David (Adam Trese), nu este foarte fericit să îl vadă pe Michael înapoi în oraș – acesta era acum polițist local. Își urăște fratele.
Michael o vrea pe Rachel înapoi, dar Rachel are un nou iubit, proprietarul clubului de noapte din oraș, Tommy Dundee (William Fichtner), care este un tip foarte gelos. Rachel însăși este o tânără fără un plan clar în viață. Vrea să devină actriță, dar nu o deranjează să înceapă prin a se „expune”, și pictează o sumedenie de ouă proaspete pentru a exersa felul în care citesc fetele numerele de pe bilele de la extragerile loto.
În acest proces ce ține de revenirea sa, Michael obține de la noul soț al mamei sale o slujbă de șofer pe o mașină blindată. El reușește să își croiască drum înapoi în societate, dar și în inima fostei sale soții. Problemele lui încep atunci când el și soția sa sunt prinși în fapt de către iubitul bătăuș al acesteia. Pentru a ieși din această încurcătură, Michael este obligat să pună la cale un plan pentru jefuirea mașinii blindate conduse de el, împreună cu Tommy și Rachel. Apoi încep țepele și trădările.
