Euchre became popular during the 1800s, its popularity spreading from Europe, then ravaged by the Napoleonic Wars, to America and Australia. In the United States it is still a very popular game.

This game is normally played between four players, two on each team, although there are variations for two to nine players. A deck of 32 cards is used, with the cards ordered in trump suit as follows: Right trump, Left trump, A > K > Q > 10 > 9 > 8 > 7. The secondary colors are in their natural order. Deal the cards and play proceeds clockwise.

The players’ objective is to win at least three trumps. If the side that set the trump fails to get three hands, it is said to have been “euchred”. Winning all five tricks is called “march”.

The highest trump is the jack of the trump suit, called the ‘straight trump’. The second highest trump is the jack of the same suit, called the “left trump”. (Example: If diamonds are trumps, then the right trump is J♦ and the left trump is J♥.) The other trumps, as well as the single suits, are ranked as follows: A (high), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7. If a joker has been added to the deck, it acts as the highest trump.

The deck is shuffled and four cards are dealt. Players with two cards higher become partners and play with the other two. The dealer deals five cards into decks of twos and threes and turns over the next card for trump.
The dealer’s left hand opens the bidding and can either “order it up” (= accept the turnup as trump) or “turn it down” (= ), in which case the next player has the same options, and so on. If everyone es, the dealer does not change and starts another round of bidding with the player to his left who can make a trump of any other suit. If they all again and the dealer does not wish to make a trump, the cards are discarded and the next dealer deals the cards.
If someone makes a call, the dealer takes the up card and discards a card instead. The dealer’s partner can bid “assist,” in which case the dealer takes the trump and he becomes the dealer. A player confident that he can get 5 trumps alone can say “cards away” to partner and play alone against opponents.
