The Only Game in Town (1970)

„The Only Game in Town” is a 1970 american drama film, the last directed by George Stevens. It stars Elizabeth Taylor and Warren Beatty.

The screenplay by Frank D. Gilroy is based on his play of the same name which had a brief run on Broadway in 1968. Aging Las Vegas chorine Fran Walker (Taylor) drifts into an affair with lounge pianist and compulsive gambler Joe Grady (Beatty) while waiting for her married lover, San Francisco businessman Thomas Lockwood, to finalize the divorce he has been promising to get for the past five years.

By the time Lockwood keeps his word and is free to marry his mistress, she finds she has fallen in love with Joe, who has finally accumulated enough money to fulfill his dream of relocating to New York City and beginning a new life there. Faced with the choice of a possible career in Manhattan or marriage to Fran, Joe opts for the latter after losing a tough poker game. This is the action in the movie…It’s said to do a film with two legends and such a thin story. Shame…

Frank Sinatra originally signed to play Joe, but when Taylor became ill and filming was postponed, he had to drop out of the project to fulfill another commitment and was replaced by Beatty. Producers paid $500,000 for the film rights before the play opened on Broadway. The play, starring Tammy Grimes and Barry Nelson, was not a success, running only sixteen performances.

The film was budgeted at $11 million because of Taylor’s insistence it be shot in Paris, , so she could be near her then-husband Richard Burton, who was working on the film Staircase (1969) with Rex Harrison at the time. It grossed only $1.5 million in the U.S. Screenwriter Gilroy’s experience making the film inspired him to write and direct the film Once in Paris (1978), which focused on his chauffeur during the Only Game shoot. Gilroy was so fascinated by the man he cast the driver as himself.

Director Curtis Hanson did a reworking of this film with his film Lucky You (2007), which dealt with a professional gambler out to break the bank in Las Vegas. The reworking was in the adding of a female singer and the gambler’s father entering a Vegas poker tournament where the story is set. The film starred Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore and Robert Duvall.

Indecent Proposal (1993)

A young couple very much in love – David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) – and  are married and have started their respective careers, she as a real estate broker, he as an architect. She finds the perfect spot to build his dream house, and they get loans to finance it. When the recession hits, they stand to lose everything they own, so they go to Vegas to have one shot at winning the money they need. After losing at the tables, they are approached by a millionaire – John Gage (Robert Redford) – who offers them a million dollars for a night with the wife.

After a difficult night, David and Diana decide to accept the offer, and a contract is signed the next day. Gage flies Diana to a private yacht where he offers her a chance to void the deal and return to her husband if he loses a toss of his lucky coin. Gage calls it correctly and she spends the night with him.

Although he had hoped to forget the whole incident, David grows increasingly insecure about his relationship with Diana, consumed with a fear that she remains involved with Gage; this insecurity is heightened by the fact Diana discovers that Gage has bought their home/property while it was going into foreclosure. Because of this tension on their relationship, David and Diana separate. Gage actively persists and renews his advances on Diana. Although she initially resists, Diana eventually consents to spending time with him and a relationship develops. David, meanwhile, realizes he cannot go on without the love of his life. When Diana files for a standing order, David makes one final attempt to win her back by g the standing order papers and giving the million dollars away. David bares his soul as to why he allowed the night to happen. It is clearly a turning point for both of them.

Gage sees how Diana looks at David and recognizes that, even if she stayed with him, their relationship would never achieve the intensity she had with David. Later in the car with Gage, it is clear Diana has made up her mind to return to David when she says to Gage that they need to talk. Gage, realizing that she longs to return to David, makes up a story that she was only the latest in a long line of „million-dollar girls”. Diana realizes that Gage is doing this to make it easy for her to leave, thanks Gage and returns to David. Before she leaves, he gives her his lucky coin, which is revealed to be double sided. She returns to the pier where David proposed, only to find him there waiting. Here they confess their love for one another.

The Hangover (2009)

Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party – Doug, Doug’s two best buddies Phil Wenneck (Bradley Cooper) and Stu Price (Ed Helms), and Tracy’s brother Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis) – hop into Tracy’s father’s beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas staying at Caesars Palace. Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as his students when he’s with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Stu has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa Valley. Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends. And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world.

The next morning, Phil, Stu and Alan awaken to find they have no memory of the previous night and Doug is nowhere to be found. Stu is missing a tooth, their hotel suite is in disarray, a tiger is in their bathroom, and a baby is in the closet. They find Doug’s mattress impaled on a statue outside of their hotel and when they ask for their Mercedes, the valet delivers a police cruiser.

Following clues to their steps, the trio travel to a hospital where they discover they were drugged with rohypnol, causing their memory loss, and that they came to the hospital from a chapel. At the chapel they learn that Stu married a stripper, Jade, despite having a long-term relationship with his mean-spirited girlfriend, Melissa. Outside the chapel, the trio are attacked by gangsters saying they are looking for someone. They flee and visit Jade, discovering that she is the mother of the baby, before being arrested by the police.

Having been told that the Mercedes has been impounded, the trio is released when they volunteer to be targets for a taser demonstration. While driving the Mercedes, they discover a naked man in the trunk who attacks them and flees. Alan confesses that he drugged their drinks to ensure they had a good night, thinking the drug to be ecstasy.

Returning to their villa, they find Mike Tyson, who orders the trio to return the tiger to his mansion immediately. Stu drugs the tiger with the remaining rohypnol and they drive towards Tyson’s home in the Mercedes, but the tiger attacks them and damages the car’s interior. After pushing the car the rest of the way to avoid the tiger, Tyson shows the trio footage of them stealing the tiger to help them locate Doug. While driving, their car is struck by another vehicle intentionally; the engers are revealed to be the gangsters from the chapel and their boss, Leslie Chow – the naked man from their trunk – who accuses the trio of stealing $80,000 of his money and kidnapping him. Chow says he has their friend, and threatens to kill him if his money is not returned. Unaware of the location of Chow’s $80,000, Alan, with help from Stu and Jade, uses his knowledge of card counting to win $82,400 playing Blackjack. They meet with Chow and exchange the money, only to find that „Doug” is the drug dealer who inadvertently sold Alan the roofies.

With the wedding occurring in hours, Phil tells Tracy they cannot find Doug. Following a conversation with „Black Doug”, Stu realizes where Doug is. The trio travel back to their hotel where they find Doug on the roof, moved there on his mattress while he was asleep, as a practical joke by Stu, Phil and Alan. Before leaving, Stu makes arrangements to go on a date with Jade the following week. With less than four hours before the wedding and with no flights available, the foursome race home, with Doug revealing he has possession of Chow’s original $80,000. Despite their late arrival, Doug and Tracy are married and Stu breaks up with Melissa after having grown tired of her controlling his life. As the reception ends, Alan finds Stu’s digital camera detailing the events they cannot and the four agree to look at the pictures together before deleting the evidence of their exploits.Fie că sunt despre jocuri de noroc sau sunt pur şi simplu setate pe fundalul unui cazinou, există filme excelente pentru care merită să continuăm periplul prin lumea filmelor… riscante!

Singurul Joc din Oraș (1970)

„The Only Game in Town” este un film american din 1970, ultimul regizat de George Stevens. În rolurile principale se află Elizabeth Taylor și Warren Beatty.

Scenariul de Frank D. Gilroy se bazează pe piesa sa cu acelaşi nume, care s-a jucat pentru scurt timp pe Broadway în 1968. Fran Walker (Taylor) plonjează într-o aventură cu un pianist de lounge şi gambler compulsiv, Joe Grady (Beatty) în timp ce aştepta ca iubitul ei căsătorit, Thomas Lockwood, un om de afaceri din San Francisco, să finalizeze divorţul pe care promitea că îl va obţine de cinci ani.

Până când Lockwood își ţine cuvântul şi este liber să se căsătorească cu amanta lui, aceasta descoperă că s-a îndrăgostit de Joe, care în cele din urmă acumulase destui bani pentru a-și îndeplini visul de a se muta la New York şi de a începe aici o nouă viață. Confruntându-se cu posibilitatea de a alege între o posibilă carieră în Manhattan sau căsătoria cu Fran, Joe optează pentru aceasta din urmă dar după ce pierde o partidă dură de poker. Aceasta este acţiunea filmului…Pentru un film cu două legende ale Hollywoodului, povestea este atât de slabă. Păcat…

Iniţial, Frank Sinatra a semnat contractul pentru a îl juca pe Joe, dar atunci când Taylor s-a îmbolnăvit şi filmarea a fost amânată, acesta a trebuit să renunţe la proiect pentru a își onora un alt angajament şi a fost înlocuit de Beatty. Producătorii au plătit 500.000 de dolari pentru drepturile filmului înainte ca piesa să se joace pe Broadway. Piesa, care i-a avut în rolurile principale pe Tammy Grimes şi Barry Nelson, nu a fost un succes, având numai şaisprezece reprezentații.

Filmul a fost bugetat la 11 milioane de dolari datorită insistenţei lui Taylor de a se filma în Paris, astfel încât ea să poată fi lângă soţul ei, Richard Burton, care lucra pe atunci cu Rex Harrison la filmul Staircase (1969). Încasările au însumat numai 1,5 milioane de dolari în SUA. Experienţa acumulată la producerea acestui film de scenaristul Gilroy, l-a inspirat pe acesta să scrie şi să regizeze filmul Once in Paris (1978), peliculă care s-a concentrat numai pe șoferul său din timpul filmărilor de la Only Game in Town. Gilroy a fost atât de fascinat de acest om încât l-a distribuit pe acesta să joace rolul personajului său.

Regizorul Curtis Hanson a făcut o completare a acestui film cu producția sa – Lucky You (2007), în care personajul principal era un gambler profesionist care dorea să dea o lovitură în Las Vegas. Completarea a constat în adăugarea unor personaje acțiunii, o cântâreață și tatăl personajului principal, care apar în Vegas la un turneu de poker, unde are loc acțiunea. În rolurile principale îi regăsim pe Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore şi Robert Duvall.

Propunere Indecentă (1993)

Un cuplu de tineri foarte îndrăgostiți – David (Woody Harrelson) și Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) – sunt căsătoriți și tocmai ce și-au început fiecare cariera, ea ca agent imobiliar, iar el ca arhitect. Ea găsește locul potrivit pentru ca el să poată construi casa visată de cei doi, și ei apelează la diverse împrumuturi pentru a putea finanța această construcție. Când recesiunea lovește, aceștia ajung în pragul de a pierde tot ce dețin, așa că într-o ultimă încercare disperată de a câștiga banii de care au nevoie, cei doi pleacă în Vegas. După ce pierd la mesele de joc, ei sunt abordați de un milionar – John Gage (Robert Redford) – care le oferă suma de un milion de dolari în schimbul unei nopți cu Diana.

După o noapte grea, David și Diana decid să accepte oferta, iar a doua zi semnează și contractul. Gage o duce pe Diana cu avionul pe un iaht privat, unde îi oferă șansa de a anula înțelegerea și de a se întoarce la soțul ei, dacă va câștiga o aruncare cu banul. Gage este cel care câștigă și cei doi își petrec noaptea împreună.

Deși David a sperat că va uita total această întâmplare, el devine din ce în ce mai nesigur de relația sa cu Diana, fiind măcinat de ideea că aceasta va continua relația cu Gage; această nesiguranță este accentuată și de faptul că Diana descoperă că Gage a cumpărat casa/proprietatea celor doi atunci când ipoteca nu a fost plătită. Ca urmare a acestor tensiuni, David și Diana se despart. Gage îi face din nou avansuri insistente Dianei. Deși inițial aceasta îl refuză, în cele din urmă ea este de acord să petreacă timp cu acesta și astfel între cei doi apare o relație. Între timp, David își dă seama că nu poate trăi fără dragostea vieții lui. În timp ce Diana înaintează actele pentru divorț, David mai face o ultimă încearcare să o aducă înapoi, astfel că acesta semnează actele de divorț și renunță la milionul de dolari. David își face procese de conștiință pentru că a fost de acord cu noaptea în cauză. Acesta este clar un moment crucial pentru cei doi.

Gage, observând felul în care Diana îl privește pe David, realizează că, chiar dacă aceasta ar rămâne cu el, niciodată relația lor nu ar avea intensitatea celei pe care Diana a avut-o cu David. Mai târziu, în mașină, când Diana îi spune lui Gage că au ceva de discutat, este clar că ea a decis să se întoarcă la David. Atunci Gage, dându-și seama că ea tânjește să se întoarcă la David, inventează o poveste cum că ea este pentru el doar una dintre multe alte „fete de un milion de dolari”. Diana realizează că Gage procedează astfel pentru ca ei să îi fie mai ușor să plece, îi mulțumește lui Gage și se întoarce la David. Înainte de plecare, acesta îi dă Dianei moneda lui norocoasă care, se dovedește a avea același simbol pe ambele fețe. Ea se duce la debarcader, la locul de întâlnire propus de David, unde îl găsește pe acesta așteptând-o. Aici cei doi își declară dragostea pe care o au unul pentru celălalt.

Marea Mahmureală (2009)

Doug Billings și Tracy Garner urmează să se căsătorească. Cu două zile înainte de nuntă, cei patru protagoniști – Doug, doi dintre cei mai buni prieteni ai acestuia, Phil Wenneck (Bradley Cooper) și Stu Price (Ed Helms), și fratele lui Tracy, Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis) – se urcă în Mercedesul decapotabil deținut și adorat de tatăl lui Tracy și pleacă în Las Vegas, se cazează la hotelul Caesars Palace, pentru o petrecere a burlacilor de  24 de ore. Phil, este profesor de liceu, dar, în compania amicilor săi, are nivelul de maturitate al elevilor săi. Stu, dentist de meserie, își face griji pentru orice, în special când vine vorba despre prietena sa Melissa, care îl cam controlează. Cum Melissa nu este deloc de acord cu ritualurile masculine de prietenie, Stu o minte, spunându-i că pleacă la o degustare de vinuri în Napa Valley și nu la o petrecere a burlacilor. În ciuda acestor lucruri, el intenționează să se căsătorească cu ea, în ciuda sfaturilor și dorințelor prietenilor săi. Iar Alan, pare total neștiutor când vine vorba despre atracțiile sociale din lumea occidentală.

În dimineața de a doua zi, când Phil, Stu și Alan se trezesc, realizează că nu-și aduc aminte nimic despre noaptea anterioară, iar Doug nu este de găsit. Stu descoperă ca are un dinte lipsă, apartamentul lor de hotel este devastat, în baia acestora se află un tigru, iar în debara un copil. Aceștia găsesc salteaua lui Doug înfiptă într-o statuie a hotelului lor, și atunci când cer să li se aducă mașina, în loc de Mercedes, valetul le aduce o mașină de poliție.

Încercând să afle ce s-a întâmplat cei trei ajung la un spital, unde descoperă că au fost drogați cu rohypnol, substanță care le-a provocat pierderea memoriei, și că anterior, au ajuns la spital de la o biserică. La biserică află că Stu, în ciuda relației serioase pe care o avea cu agitata lui prietenă Melissa, se căsătorise cu o stripteuză pe nume Jade. Când cei trei părăsesc biserica, sunt atacați de niște mafioți care spun că sunt în căutarea cuiva. Ei reușesc să scape, și merg în vizită la Jade, unde descoperă, înainte de a fi arestați de poliție, că aceasta are un copil.

Poliția le spune că Mercedesul a fost sechestrat de forțele de ordine și în cele din urmă le redă libertatea după ce aceștia se oferă voluntari pentru testarea unui pistol cu electroșocuri. Pe drum, ei descoperă că în portbagajul Mercedesului se află un om dezbrăcat, care îi atacă și fuge. Alan recunoaște că, din dorința de a avea o noapte de distracție pe cinste, a pus droguri în băuturile tuturor, crezând că era ecstasy.

Întorcându-se înapoi la vila lor, cei trei îl găsesc aici pe Mike Tyson, care le ordonă să îi returneze imediat tigrul și să-l aducă la conacul său. Stu droghează tigrul cu rohypnolul rămas, dar acesta se trezește în Mercedes, în drum spre casa lui Tyson, îi atacă și distruge interiorul mașinii. De frica tigrului, cei trei împing mașina tot restul drumului până laTyson, iar acesta le arată o filmare cu ei furând tigrul, care după părerea lor ar fi trebuit să îi ajute să-l localizeze pe Doug. Mașina lor este lovită intenționat, în mers, de un alt vehicol, în care se aflau mafioții de la capelă și șeful acestora, Leslie Chow – omul dezbrăcat din portbagaj – care îi acuză pe cei trei că au furat 80.000 de dolari de la el și că l-au răpit. Chow spune că prietenul celor trei se află la el, și amenință că îl va omorâ dacă banii nu îi sunt înapoiați. Neștiind unde se află cei 80.000 de dolari ai lui Chow, Alan, cu ajutorul lui Stu și al lui Jade, își folosește abilitățile de a număra cărțile și câștigă 82.400 de dolari jucând Blackjack. Aceștia se întâlnesc cu Chow, îi dau banii și descoperă că de fapt, „Doug” era traficantul de droguri care îi vânduse lui Alan rohypnolul.

Cum nunta era programată să înceapă în câteva ore, Phil îi spune în cele din urmă lui Tracy că nu îl găsește pe Doug. În urma unei conversații cu „Doug cel de culoare”, Stu își dă seama unde este Doug. Cei trei se întorc la hotel unde îl găsesc pe Doug, care se afla pe acoperiș, deoarece Stu, Phil și Alan s-au gândit să-i joace o festă și l-au mutat acolo în timp ce dormea. Înainte de plecare, Stu își aranjează o  întâlnească cu Jade pentru săptămâna ce va veni. Cu mai puțin de patru ore înainte de începerea nunții și niciun zbor disponibil, cei patru gonesc spre casă, iar Doug descoperă că este în posesia celor 80.000 de dolari pieduți inițial de Chow. În ciuda faptului că au întârziat, Doug și Tracy se căsătoresc iar Stu se desparte de Melissa, realizând că s-a săturat ca aceasta să-i controleze viața. La sfârșitul petrecerii, Alan găsește aparatul foto al lui Stu, care conținea detalii ale evenimentelor pe care cei patru nu și le puteau aminti, și, hotărăsc ca înainte de a șterge dovezile faptelor de vitejie, să se uite împreună la poze.
