Godolphin Racing

Godolphin Racing Inc was founded in 1994 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and vice-president of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Mohammed also owns the world renowned thoroughbred breeding operation, Darley Stable.

Descended from one of the most notable tribes in Arabia, Bani Yas, horses have been part of his life since childhood. His Highness, born on July 15, 1949 is the third son of H.H. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Sheikh Mohammed was nine when Sheikh Saeed, his grandfather and Ruler of Dubai, to whom he was particularly close, sadly died. The new Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed’s father, Sheikh Rashid, began to prepare his sons to serve their country and in August of 1966 Sheikh Mohammed travelled to Cambridge, England to study. In Cambridge, he stayed with an English family where horseracing and its history were often discussed. Sheikh Mohammed liked to tell his hosts that the most influential sire in British racing was an Arabian horse named the Godolphin Arabian.

Sheikh Mohammed named Godolphin Racing after the handsome 18th century Arabian stallion, Godolphin, who is widely acknowledged as being one of the major contributors to the modern thoroughbred bloodstock race horse that is so prized around the world today.

Established in 1992 with only a handful of horses, Godolphin quickly emerged as a force within the sport and set about dispelling long-held prejudices about how the very best racehorses should and could be trained. Under the care of trainer Saeed bin Suroor, Godolphin horses enjoy the benefits of Dubai’s warm climate during the winter months. Godolphin Racing has fully-fledged horse racing stables and operations in both Dubai and Newmarket, England. To escape the cold weather, Godolphin thoroughbreds spend their winters in the desert heat of Dubai and are then transported to England in the summer months.

Godolphin’s first major Gr 1 triumph came in 1994 when 3-year-old filly Balanchine – ridden by Frankie Dettori – won the prestigious Oaks at Epsom Downs. Since then Godolphin Racing has yielded some of the best thoroughbreds in the international horse racing scene. Godolphin’s global achievements have matched its early ambitions and the distinctive Royal Blue silks have been carried to victory in no fewer than 205 Group One races in 12 different countries across four continents (Asia, Australia, Europe & North America).

Godolphin horses have triumphed in 59 Classic races in Europe and the UAE. Numerous major North American wins include four at the Breeders’ Cup meeting, highlighted by the victories of Daylami (1999) and Fantastic Light (2001) in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

John Magnier

John Magnier was born and bred in Fermoy, County Cork Ireland, and is considered to be one of the world’s foremost thoroughbred stud owners. A billionaire today, Magnier was the main driving force behind the world renowned multi-national racehorse breeding operation, Coolmore Stud, which currently has operations all over the globe.

In fact, with its headquarters at Fethard in County Tipperary, Coolmore Stud is acknowledged to be the world’s largest and arguably best stallion breeding operations and thoroughbred nurseries. Magnier got his start in the thoroughbred breeding business from a very early age after being forced to drop out of school at the age of 15 following the death of his father.

He took over his family farm and soon earned a reputation as something of a natural stallion master. He went on to marry Susan O’Brien, the daughter of Coolmore Stud partner and pre-eminent trainer Vincent O’Brien. Later Magnier acquired a large share of Coolmore Stud and is widely credited with building the Irish thoroughbred breeding operation into the giant it is today.

He developed the best racing horses and breeding stock, mainly by purchasing the progeny of the great Canadian stallion Northern Dancer. Their forays to the bloodstock auctions at Keeneland Sales furthered their rising stock at home. Eventually, John Magnier came to head the operation and thus began an upward spiral of success. His racing empire, which became arguably the most successful on the planet, is nowadays powered by a huge string of blue-blooded thoroughbreds trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O’Brien plus dozens of others in the care of a number of other trainers.

The strength of thoroughbred talent residing at Coolmore is indicated by the fact that eleven of the fifteen winners of the blue riband of the turf, the Epsom Derby, between 1998 and 2012 were sired by Coolmore stallions (High Estate, Fairy King, Grand Lodge, Sadler’s Wells (two), Danehill, Montjeu (four) and Galileo).

John Magnier has proved to be a canny businessman and investor in areas other than those involving horses, which includes his 28.89 percent stake in the world famous and highly profitable English football club, Manchester United, which he sold in 2005. With homes in Ireland, Switzerland and Barbados, John Magnier is estimated to be worth over 2 billion Euros making him one of Europe’s wealthiest people.

Frank H. Stronach

Born as Franz Strohsack in Kleinsemmering, Styria, Austria to working-class parents, Stronach’s childhood was marked by the Great Depression and the Second World War. At age 14, he left school to apprentice as a tool and die maker. In 1954, at 22 he moved to Montreal in Canada where two years later he started his own manufacturing business. Over the years he built the business into Magna International Ltd, a highly successful auto supplier.

Along the way, Frank Stronach developed a ion for thoroughbred horseracing and founded Magna Entertainment Corporation (MEC). MEC owns and operates some of the most successful horseracing venues in Austria and the United States, including Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park, Pimlico Race Course, Laurel Park, Golden Gate Fields, Thistledown, and Portland Meadows.

The company operates off-track betting facilities as well as a national wagering operation called XpressBet. Via XpressBet, horseracing fans can wager telephonically or via the Internet on races at more than 100 North American horse racing venues as well as on races in South Africa, Australia and Dubai.

MEC also owns a host of successful thoroughbreds. One of the most famous of these is Glorious Song who in 1980 was awarded the coveted Sovereign Award for Canadian Horse of the Year.

His horses have won the Queen’s Plate in 1994 and 1997, the Belmont Stakes in 1997, and the Preakness Stakes in 2000. His horse Ghostzapper won several major races including the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic, was voted the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year, and named the World’s Top Ranked Horse for 2004. In Canada, Stronach and his Stronach Stables has won the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Owner nine times. In the United States, he earned the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Owner in 1998, 1999, and 2000. In 2000, he won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Breeder. He subsequently established Adena Springs Farms which owns horse breeding farms in Kentucky, Florida and Canada and won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Breeder in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Godolphin Racing Inc a fost fondată în 1994 de Alteța Sa Șeicul Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, conducător al Dubaiului şi vicepreşedinte al Emiratelor Arabe Unite. Șeicul Mohammed deține, de asemenea, și operaţiunea de reproducere de cai rasă cu renume mondial, Darley Stable.

John Magnier
