Summer guests were losing their time playing red and black, ecarte and whist. There was no question of a roulette table at that time, and soon gambling was banned. But times changed – authorities have looked with opportunism at gambling in the spa baths. The Karlsruhe Ministry has raised a game toll from larger hotels starting with 1801. The toll went to Badfond, or „bathing fund”, which contributed to financing roads and other infrastructure projects of that time. The increased number of visitors coming to the spa brought the pleasure for gambling and the authorities took action – with concessions for two French colonels for the former Kurhaus, now called the House of Conversation. The Baden-Baden Casino was opened in 1748 by Edouard Benazet, who hired Parisian artists to create stylish rooms, the great attraction of today’s tourists.
