Dean Martin was one of the most  popular showroom headliner  in Las Vegas entertainment history. His name is synonymous with The Rat Pack and Sin City itself. It is no wonder Las Vegas has a street named after the legendary Dean Martin. n6z6k

Dean Martin Drive snakes its way through the southwest portion of the valley to just north of Flamingo Road, where it turns into its former name, Industrial Road. That section continues on across the valley, stopping just short of Charleston Boulevard.

Martin was born Dino Crocetti in 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio, to Italian immigrants. Until Martin began attending public school he only spoke Italian, a detail that made him no friends but did make him the subject of ridicule. The youngest of two sons, Martin struggled in grade school because of his strong Italian accent.

Martin dropped out of school in the 10th grade to focus on drumming and began taking odd jobs delivering bootlegged liquor, boxing and working as a blackjack dealer.

Martin began singing around the same time and spent a good portion of the 1940s perfecting his style as a lounge act. It was then that he began calling himself Dino Martini, after a famous opera singer he idolized. It was also during that time that Martin began working with musician and band leader Sammy Watkins, who suggested that the crooner change his name to Dean Martin.

Martin met Frank Sinatra in 1943 after flopping at a New York nightclub. The two wouldn’t form a substantial friendship for a number of years.

In 1944, Martin was drafted into the Army at the height of World War II. He was eventually discharged for medical reasons. Martin met comic Jerry Lewis while performing in New York, and the pair formed a fast friendship, eventually deciding to meld their respective acts into a comedy-music duo. The pair made their television debut in 1948. A radio series was quick to follow, as were movie deals.

Dean arrived in Las Vegas in September, 1949. He and Jerry headlined at Bugsy Siegel’s creation, the Flamingo Hotel, on Highway 91 (now the Strip).

In 1950, they started filming their second  movie, „My Friend Irma Goes West”, has Dean and Jerry going out west to Las Vegas.  Its opening, June 26, 1951, held at the El Portal Theatre in Las Vegas, was the first movie premiere in Las Vegas history.

In 1952, Dean was vacationing in Las Vegas when the Flamingo’s headliner, Kay Starr, became sick. Until Dick Haymes could arrive to replace her, Dean filled in for a solo performance. It was to be the start of his solo Las Vegas career. That same year the Sands Hotel opened, with Copacabana manager Jack Entratter as Entertainment Director. Dean and Jerry left the Flamingo and were signed to play the Sands’ Copa Room.

In the meantime, Dean and Jerry’s relationship became more and more strained. Dean believed his singing career was becoming an afterthought in their movies, and the animosity and clash of egos was growing.  Something had to give, and on July 24, 1956, they came back to Atlantic City and played their last show together, and officially broke up.

In March of 1957 he formally opened as a single at The Sands for $25,000 a week. He show only lasted 38 minutes, but he was a hit and was signed to a 5-year deal. After the show he went into the casino to deal blackjack, something he continued to do after many of his shows.

NBC had seen Dean  host „The Hollywood Palace”, a variety show on ABC, and wanted to get him onto NBC. He didn’t really want do it, and kept turning them down, finally saying yes only if they agreed to an outrageous list of demands: a huge paycheck, no rehearsal, and working one day a week. NBC said yes, and that’s how The Dean Martin premiered September 16, 1965. The first year was marked by too many acts, not enough of Dean, and so-so ratings. Producer Greg Garrison then surrounded him with a dancing troupe called The Golddiggers and the biggest names in show business. Dean rehearsed the musical medleys on the day of taping, but relied on  cue cards for the sketches, which only made them funnier. Within a year, the show was the highest rated show on television.

Martin launched a solo career, doing movies and making albums in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s. It was during that time that he formed a friendship with Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. The three ed with Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford and eventually became known as the Rat Pack.

The group performed at the Sands Hotel, singing and doing slapstick comedy as much for themselves as for the audience. It was all very good-natured and fun. Audience might feel they did it to entertain themselves and the audience. There was a brotherly love kind of thing going on there.

Around the same time Howard Hughes took  over ownership of The Sands, and one night cut off Sinatra’s credit at the casino. Frank flew into a  rage, got into a fistfight and quit the hotel. When Dean stayed on; Frank deemed him disloyal, causing some friction in their relationship.  When Frank left Capitol to start his own record label, Reprise, Dean soon ed him on the new label.

In the early 60s, the James Bond craze was in full force, and the studios were putting together their own secret agent film series. When Columbia began a series of Matt Helm films, starting with „The Silencers,” the search was on for an agent suave enough to catch bad guys without spilling his drink. The part went to Dean, and he made 4 Matt Helm films.  In his last film, Bruce Lee helped teach Dean some karate moves.

In 1968, Dean worked out a deal with The Riviera and opened at the Versailles Room on June 17, 1968. He also his own private bar there called Dino’s Den for him and his guests. In the early 1970s, the show was still doing well, and Martin was playing to sold-out crowds at nightclubs and casinos. In 1972 he decided he only wanted to do one show per night. That was unheard of at the time, so Dean left for the new MGM Grand Hotel. In June, 1975, Dean was the first performer to play at the Celebrity Room of newly-opened MGM Grand. When the hotel changed to the Bally Grand in 1986, Dean stayed around and performed there throughout the rest of his career. In 1990 Jerry Lewis wheeled a cake onstage for his 72nd birthday.

Martin’s final Las Vegas shows were at Bally’s Las Vegas in 1990.

Almost everybody who worked with him says similar things about Dean. He was fun to work with and a complete professional, and on movie sets usually knew not only his lines everyone else’s. He also liked to get in and out and not spend time rehearsing.  He personality was that of a loner, who was almost impossible to get to know. Even if his wives had trouble really knowing him.

Martin was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1993 and died of acute respiratory failure at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Dec. 25 1995. He was 78. Industrial Road was renamed Dean Martin Drive in October 2005. În 1944, Martin a fost recrutat în Armată, venise cel de-al Doilea Război Mondial. În cele din urmă a fost eliberat din serviciul militar din motive de sănătate. Martin l-a cunoscut pe comediantul Jerry Lewis care juca în New York, cei doi s-au împrietenit rapid și în cele din urmă au hotărât să-și unească numerele într-unul singur, de comedie-muzicală.  Perechea a debutat în televiziune  în 1948. Rapid a apărut și un serial la radio, dar și ofertele de filme.

Ceva trebuia să se întâmple, astfel că pe 24 iulie 1956, aceștia s-au întors în Atlantic City unde au ținut ultimul lor spectacol împreună, după care s-au despărțit.

În martie 1957, Dean juca solo în deschidere la The Sands pentru 25.000 de dolari pe săptămână. Spectacolul său dura numai 38 de minute, dar era un mare succes și acesta a semnat un contract pe 5 ani. După spectacol acesta mergea în cazinou unde era dealer de blackjack, lucru pe care a continuat să-l facă după spectacole, timp de mulți ani.

NBC l-a văzut pe Dean  găzduind „The Hollywood Palace”, un spectacol de varietăți al ABC, și a dorit să îl aducă la NBC. Acesta nu prea a vrut să facă schimbarea și i-a refuzat de multe ori, în cele din urmă a spus da, dar numai dacă aceștia ar fi fost de acord cu o listă de cereri scandalos de mari: un cec de plată enorm, nicio repetiție, și să lucreze o zi pe săptămână.

NBC a spus da, și astfel The Dean Martin Show a avut premiera pe 16 septembrie 1965. În primul an s-au înregistrat multe spectacole, însă prea puține cu Dean și o audiență medie. Atunci Greg Garrison, producătorul spectacolului, l-a înconjurat pe artist cu o trupă de dansatori numită The Golddiggers și cu cele mai bune nume din lumea show-ului de atunci. Dean a repetat diverse muzicaluri de tap, dar se baza mai mult pe scenete, unde era și mai comic. Într-un an spectacolul a devenit cel mai vizionat spectacol de televiziune.

Martin s-a lansat într-o carieră solo, jucând în filme și înregistrând albume la sfârșitul anilor 1950 și pe tot parcursul anilor 1960. Tot în această perioadă el s-a împrietenit cu Sinatra și Sammy Davis Jr. Celor trei li s-au alăturat Joey Bishop și Peter Lawford și în cele din urmă au devenit faimoși cu numele de Rat Pack.

Grupul ținea spectacole la Sands Hotel, unde interpreții cântau și aveau numere de comedie ușoară, atât pentru audiență cât și pentru propriul amuzament.

Totul era foarte pozitiv și distractiv. Publicul avea senzația că făceau asta atât pentru propriul amuzament cât și pentru cel al publicului. Se simțea un fel de dragoste frățească pe scenă.

Cam în aceeași perioadă, Howard Hughes prelua hotelul The Sands, și într-o seară i-a oprit creditul din cazinou lui Sinatra. Frank s-a enervat, s-a luat la bătaie și și-a dat demisia de la hotel. Dean a rămas; Frank i-a spus atunci lui Martin că nu este loial, lucru care a creat divergențe în relația celor doi. Când Frank a plecat de la Capitol pentru a porni o afacere cu propria sa casă de discuri, Reprise, Dean i s-a alăturat imediat.

La începutul anilor 60, nebunia James Bond era pe val, și toate televiziunile lucrau la seriale proprii cu agenți secreți. Când Columbia a început seria de filme Matt Helm, începând cu „The Silencers,” se căuta un agent care să fie destul de curtenitor încât ar fi putut să prindă personajele negative fără să își verse paharul de băutură. Rolul i-a revenit lui Dean, care a făcut 4 filme Matt Helm. În ultimul său film, Dean era ajutat de Bruce Lee să învețe câteva figuri de karate.

În 1968, Dean a negociat un contract cu The Riviera și pe 17 iunie în același an acesta deschidea Versailles Room. Acesta avea aici și un bar privat numit Dino’s Den, care îi era destinat doar lui și invitaților săi. La începutul anilor 1970, spectacolul încă mergea, iar Martin juca în cazinouri și cluburi de noapte, cu casa plină. În 1972, el a decis că nu dorește să susțină mai mult de un spectacol pe seară. În acea perioadă acest lucru era de neînchipuit, astfel că Dean a plecat la  noul MGM Grand Hotel. În iunie 1975, Dean era primul artist care juca în sala Celebrity Room a nou deschisului hotel MGM Grand. În 1986, când hotelul s-a schimbat în Bally Grand, Dean a rămas și a continuat să joace aici până la sfârșitul carierei sale. Aproape toți cei care au lucrat cu Dean, spun lucruri similare despre el. Era distractiv să lucrezi cu el şi era un profesionist desăvârșit, iar pe platourile de filmare știa de obicei nu numai replicile sale, ci și replicile tuturor celorlalți. De asemenea, îi plăcea să vină să joace şi să plece, nu-i plăceau repetițiile. Avea personalitate de singuratic, era aproape imposibil de cunoscut. Chiar și soțiile lui au întâmpinat dificultăți în a-l cunoaște cu adevărat.

Martin a fost diagnosticat cu cancer la plămâni în 1993 și a murit de insuficiență respiratorie acută în casa sa din Beverly Hills, California, pe 25 decembrie 1995. Avea 78 de ani. Industrial Road a fost renumit Dean Martin Drive în octombrie 2005. În onoarea marelui artist, luminile din Las Vegas Strip care nu sunt oprite aproape niciodată, au fost stinse.
