Those who share a ion for gambling are knights of fortune by definition: they love adrenaline, the pressure during the games, the intrigue that comes with them and the competition for primacy. Well, some forms of entertainment offered by those who own casinos happen to exploit these exact propensities. This is the case of a natural sanctuary which is located just minutes from the Strip of Vegas, hosting no less than 40 lions, many wild birds and a giraffe; the latter considered the attraction of this place, due to the fact that it has an…unusual talent. A few years ago, a part of this habitat was placed inside the MGM Grand casino. This place can be considered a well-guarded secret of Vegas.
”Feast with the beasts”
This is one of the slogans that appear on the site of this farm – called Lion Habitat Ranch. Those who visit this place have the opportunity to also feed the animals – not free of charge, as ultimately it’s a business we’re talking about. Moreover, visitors can also take photos with the animals. The president and founder of this ranch, Keith Evans, claims that it’s a non-profit organization and that its main mission is to cater for animals, facilitating the link between them and humans, himself being in a continuous search for means of making this habitat a better place for animals. He works with big felines since 1970, and he opened the ranch in 1989.
We were mentioning at the beginning that the giraffe, named Ozzie, is the main attraction of this habitat, the main reason being that it has a secret talent: it can paint. But that is not all, because guests can also go home with a painting made by Ozzie. The cost of such a painting varies between $40 and $60, depending on the size of the canvas.
Withim just 20 km from the Strip of Vegas, the ranch is now a place often visited by players who feel the need to relax after a tensed gaming round that pushed their patience to the limits. Well, this space covering four ha can be considered an oasis of silence for some, but others can liken it with the adrenaline during a game. Getting close to a lion can be seen as a challenge even for the most experienced players – who are highly familiar with the adrenaline rushes. In order to feed the giraffe visitors have to pay a $20 tax, and for the lions the price goes up to $100 for half a kilo of food. For the brave hearts, people from the habitat offer the chance of getting a “behind the scenes” tour, which implies access into the natural habitat of the lions and getting really close to them. The cost for such a tour is $125 per person, a very small amount for a player that sometimes pays this for a buy-in. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes.
The entrance prices vary, given the fact that group discounts are offered as well as smaller prices for families, but the standard price for an adult is $25, and free for children. Benefiting from free entrance are also those who celebrate their birthday, who can choose another day of the month to profit from free entrance in case the habitat is closes on their birthday. The highest price is set for a really special session: three-hour training with the lion tamers and caretakers, which costs $800.
The lions, brought back to the ranch from the casino
For those who are familiar with Vegas, the lions could also be seen, up until 2012, inside the MGM Grand casino. Keith Evans transported them daily – and he did this for 11 years, so that animals never spent the night inside the hotel, while during the day they were displayed for iration behind a show-window. The habitat inside the casino was inaugurated in 1999, and it had a tunnel inside so that visitors could transverse the lion area ing below them. The area was closed following a renovation project started by MGM there.
In fact, the lion is also a symbol used by MGM for the logo of the company, therefore this endeavor of bringing the lions inside the casino was also marketing oriented, relying on branding purposes as well. On the other side, the targeted audience was well chosen, as those who go daily inside the casinos are adrenaline lovers and looking for extreme experiences. This concept – considered a tribute for the symbol of the MGM Company – was close to being compromised in 2010, when one of the care takers was attacked by a lion. The company managed to get out of it without its image compromised, probably due to the fortunate fact that the care taker was not seriously injured by the lion.
A secret of Vegas? Nothing can be considered a secret anymore in the Internet era, but this lion habitat is for sure still a secret for many of those who visit casinos. These forms of entertainment, relaxation or escapism are more and more often sought after among players, so that secrets are sometimes uncovered by the very persons who should guard them.

Ei bine, unele forme de entertainment oferite de cei care dețin cazinourile exploatează tocmai aceste propensiuni. Este și cazul unei rezervații naturale situată la doar câteva minute de Strip of Vegas, care adăpostește nu mai puțin de 40 de lei, mai multe păsări sălbatice și o girafă, considerată atracția acestui loc prin faptul că are un talent…cel puțin neobișnuit. Până acum câțiva ani, o parte a acestei rezervații era amenajată în cadrul cazinoului MGM Grand. Acest loc poate fi considerat un secret bine păzit al Vegasului.
”Festin cu bestiile”
Acesta este unul dintre ”sloganurile” afișate pe site-ul acestei ferme – numită Lion Habitat Ranch. Cei care vizitează acest loc au ocazia să și hrănească animalele – totul contra cost, fiind vorba în fond despre o afacere. În plus, vizitatorii se pot fotografia cu animalele. Președintele și fondatorul acestei ferme, Keith Evans, susține că organizația este una non-profit și că misiunea ei principală este grija pentru animale, facilitarea legăturii dintre acestea și oameni, fiind în continuă căutare de mijloace pentru a face acest habitat unul mai bun pentru animale. El lucrează cu felinele mari încă din 1970, ferma fiind deschisă din 1989.
Menționam la început faptul că girafa, pe care o cheamă Ozzie, este atracția principală a acestui habitat, motivul principal fiind acela că are un talent ascuns: poate picta. Dar asta nu e tot, pentru că vizitatorii pot pleca acasă cu un mic tablou realizat de aceasta. Costul unui astfel de tablou este cuprins între 40-60 de dolari, în funcție de mărimea pânzei.
Aflată la doar 20 de km de Strip of Vegas, ferma a devenit un loc des vizitat de jucătorii care simt nevoia să se relaxeze după o partidă de joc care le-a testat răbdarea și poate nervii. Ei bine, acest spațiu care acoperă patru hectare poate fi considerat de unii o oază de liniște, însă alții îl pot asemui cu adrenalina din timpul unui joc. Apropierea de un leu poate fi văzută ca o provocare chiar și de cei mai experimentați jucători – care sunt familiarizați cu adrenalina. Pentru a hrăni girafa vizitatorii trebuie să achite o taxă de 20 de dolari, iar pentru lei prețul este de 100 de dolari pentru jumătate de kilogram de mâncare. Pentru cei mai curajoși, cei de acolo oferă posibilitatea unui tur ”behind the scenes”, ceea ce implică trecerea în habitatul natural al leilor și apropierea de ei. Costul pentru un astfel de tur este de 125 de dolari de persoană, o sumă modică pentru un jucător care uneori plătește această sumă pentru un buy-in. Turul are o durată de 90 de minute.

Cel mai ridicat preț este fixat pentru o sesiune cu totul specială: un training de trei ora alături de îngrijitorii leilor, care costă 800 de dolari.
Leii, mutați din cazino în rezervație
Pentru cei familiarizați cu Vegasul, leii puteau fi văzuți, până în 2012, în interiorul cazinoului MGM Grand. Keith Evans ducea leii zilnic acolo – și a făcut asta timp de 11 ani, în așa fel încât animalele nu petreceau niciodată noaptea la hotel, iar ziua puteau fi irați din spatele unei vitrine de către vizitatori. Acest habitat din interiorul cazinoului a fost inaugurat în 1999, cu un tunel în interior pentru ca vizitatorii să poată traversa practic zona în care stăteau cei șase lei aduși zilnic acolo, putând trece chiar pe sub ei. Această zonă a fost închisă în urma demarării unui proiect de renovare de către cei de la MGM.
De altfel, leul este și un simbol folosit de MGM pentru logo-ul companiei, prin urmare acest demers de aducere a leilor în interiorul cazinoului a avut și rațiuni de marketing, respectiv branding. Pe de altă parte, publicul țintă a fost bine ales, având în vedere că cei prezenți zilnic în cazinouri sunt în căutare de senzații tari și iubesc adrenalina. Acest concept – considerat un tribut adus simbolului companiei MGM, leul – a fost aproape de a fi compromis în 2010, atunci când unul dintre îngrijitori a fost atacat de un leu. Momentul a fost însă depășit la nivel de imagine, probabil și datorită faptului că îngrijitorul nu a fost rănit serios.
Un secret al Vegasului? Nimic nu mai poate fi considerat secret în epoca internetului, însă acest habitat al leilor este cu siguranță un secret pentru mulți dintre cei care vizitează cazinourile. Aceste forme de entertainment, de recreere sau de escapism sunt însă tot mai căutate în rândul jucătorilor, așa încât secretele sunt deconspirate chiar de cei care ar trebui să le păzească.
